5 mini-breaks flying from Aberdeen

Forbes Place’s ideal location within the Stoneywood Estate is just ten minutes from Aberdeen International Airport. Flying to destinations throughout the UK and beyond, a mini-break is easier than ever with your new home at Forbes Place. We’ve picked out five destinations, all with direct flights from Aberdeen.

Warsaw, Poland

With its impressive architecture, lush landscaped gardens and pedestrianised squares, Poland’s capital is definitely a city to explore on foot. Take a visit to the cobbled streets of Old Town; with its busy market on the main square and bars and restaurants lining the piazza. Whilst you’re there, sample a Polish delicacy like pierogi (stuffed dumplings) and soak up the atmosphere.

Wilanów Palace

To see some of Warsaw’s varied architecture head along the ‘Royal Route’. This takes you from the Old Town past a number of beautiful palaces and churches in the city, ending at the stunning baroque Wilanów Palace. Most sites are open daily but check in advance if you wish to explore inside.

Like most European capitals, Warsaw’s got its fair share of skyscrapers and a bustling nightlife. To experience the best of both, order yourself a cocktail at the Panorama bar on the 40th floor of the Marriott hotel. As you can guess by its name, the Panorama bar has one of the best outlooks of the city, and if you visit just before sunset, you’ll enjoy a striking view across the capital.

Malaga, Spain

From February 2017 Ryanair has been flying direct from Aberdeen to Malaga and you can bag yourself a return flight for under £120. With temperatures on average ten degrees hotter than Aberdeen year round, a mini-break to Malaga might be just what you need for some guaranteed sunshine.

Malaga

Whilst Malaga’s coastal spot defines it as part of the Costa del Sol, the city is much, much more than a beach venue. Over the last decade, Malaga has firmly established itself as a cultural destination. As the birthplace of Picasso, the museum dedicated to him is one of more than 30 museums which have shot up across the city. More recent additions include the ‘pop-up’ Pompidou centre, located at Malaga’s port.

As well as clocking up a couple of hours in one of the many museums, it’s worth exploring a part of Malaga’s history; take a visit to the Alcazaba fortress, an impressive 11th century citadel. For just a few euros you can explore the fortress, and enjoy beautiful views across the city from the top.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is a city you can explore on foot, by bike or even by canal boat.

Travelling by boat is a good way to see Copenhagen if you haven’t got too much time. You can join a canal tour to see popular sites such as the Little Mermaid Statue and Christiansborg Palace, as well as idyllic Nyhavn. A well-recognised and historic port, Nyhavn is filled with colourful buildings which line the streets either side of the canal. The former houses have been transformed into petite, upmarket restaurants, great if you want to enjoy some local cuisine, or even just stop for a coffee and soak up the bustling atmosphere.

One of the most popular destinations in Copenhagen (and well worth putting on your itinerary), are the Tivoli Gardens. The second oldest amusement park in the world, Tivoli Gardens are home to an array of beautiful exotic gardens, a theme park and restaurants. One of the main attractions is a 100-year-old wooden roller coaster (eek!) but if you don’t fancy the rides, there’s a year round programme of live concerts, theatre shows and firework displays. During the winter, Tivoli becomes alive with Christmas festivity as the gardens are transformed into a winter wonderland complete with ‘snow topped’ market stalls. Lovely for an evening stroll.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Known for its enchanting scenery, Iceland is high on the list for anyone with an adventurous spirit.

Reykjavik is the capital city and cultural hub of the country, located on the south west coast. Filled with popular museums and arts venues, Downtown Reykjavik (also known by its postcode, 101) is thriving with activity throughout the day and well into the night. Head to the main street, Laugavegur and enjoy some live jazz at Café Rosenberg or go to Kaffibarinn, one of Reykjavik’s most famous bars, to kick off your evening.

Strokkur geyser on the Golden Circle route

To experience the best of Iceland’s majestic landscape, you’ll need to head out of the city. You could go hiking in the glaciers, swim in the Blue Lagoon or head along the Golden Circle, a popular tourist route which stops off at the Thingvellir National Park, and an erupting hot spring geyser. One of the most magical events you can enjoy in Iceland are the Northern Lights. During the darkest months of the year, this natural wonder can be seen on nights when the skies are clearest. There’s no guarantees, but if you’re lucky, it’s a mesmerising spectacle you won’t forget.

Corfu, Greece

With direct flights throughout the summer, Corfu is a popular Greek island which is great for getting away from it all. One of the greenest of the Greek islands; inland, the landscape is mountainous and populated with olive trees, however most visitors head to the beautiful coast.

Kassiopi, Corfu

Kassiopi

For those wanting a party atmosphere, Kavos and Sidari are the liveliest resorts, or if you prefer to relax by the shore, a destination on the west coast of the island has the sandiest beaches. On the north east coast, Kassiopi is a beautiful harbour with great restaurants and lovely pebbled beaches; it’s perfectly clear waters mean it’s ideal for snorkelling.

Corfu Town is definitely worth a day trip whilst staying on the island. A listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, the town dates back to the 8th century BC. Comprised of narrow cobbled streets, have a wander round and admire the historic palaces and churches; look out for the dark red bell tower of the Saint Spyridon church, the highest point in the town.
